Two sparkling new vans awarded through a Kansas Department of Transportation grant arrived at CCL in April. They have been assigned to the houses at 14th Street in Arkansas City and 515 Eunice in El Dorado.
The vans are on a 13-passenger chassis but were reconfigured for wheelchairs. Each now has two fold-up seats and four wheelchair tie-downs, allowing a maximum of eight passengers.
CCL was required to pay $9,996.20 for each van or one-fifth of the purchase price of $49,981.00. KDOT paid nearly $80,000.00 for the two vehicles.
Two of CCL’s older vans that had traveled many miles and experienced mechanical problems were removed from the fleet. The new vehicle in Cowley County replaced CCL’s first KDOT vehicle, which was awarded in 2001 and had traveled more than 150,000 miles at the time the grant was written.
Ruth Bumgarner, CCL’s director of development, attends monthly KDOT meetings and wrote the grant more than a year ago.
