Swimming, bingo, horseback riding, hayrack rides, crafts and trying out the zipline were all popular activities at Creative Community Living’s camp last week.
And that wasn’t all. Campers could also fish, cruise on a pontoon boat, attend chapel, fly kites, try archery, play mini golf, shoot with BB guns, dance, and participate in a scavenger hunt. Games included a cakewalk, tossing rings on 2-liter bottles of pop, playing volleyball with a beach ball, breaking piñatas and playing tug-of-war.
“A favorite of some staff members and clients was squirting people with giant water guns,” said Rodney Perry, CCL’s director of residential services and one of the camp directors. “There were lots of fights. I don’t think anyone left camp with dry clothes.”
Camp, which was for men and women with developmental disabilities, was held July 8-10 at the Kansas Jaycees Cerebral Palsy Ranch three miles north of Augusta. About 120 individuals supported by CCL in Winfield, Arkansas City and El Dorado attended, and 20 Southwinds clients from Winfield participated one afternoon.
Those assisting were KJCPR staff members, CCL staff members and volunteers from the community. The Red Devil Chefs of El Dorado grilled hamburgers and hot dogs for the evening meal on Thursday. Parents and other family members were special guests that evening.
“Campers get a chance to do some things they normally wouldn’t,” Perry said. “They can enjoy the outdoors, and it’s all at a very reasonable price.”
Fund-raisers are held by CCL throughout the year to raise money to cover many of the expenses.
