Picture this: People of all ages, seated around tables, are playing roulette, craps, poker, blackjack, bingo, slot machines, Plinko and Wheel of Fortune. Occasionally someone breaks into a loud cheer. A few wander over to enjoy a plateful of food. Others browse through the selection of silent auction items. The sounds of laughter, groans and chatter hover over the crowd.
You probably guessed that describes Creative Community Living’s 2009 Casino Night. This year’s version will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, in the Winfield Community Center.
“We invite everyone to join us for an evening of fun,” said Jane Sandbulte, chairperson of the Casino Night Committee. “It is a way people can have fun while helping those with disabilities enjoy a fuller life. The money we raise replenishes our Life Enhancement Fund. Case managers submit applications to that fund when clients need help paying for their basic expenses.”
At 10, everyone’s play money they’ve accumulated at Casino Night will be counted so bidding in a live auction can begin at 10:30. But just before the auction begins, the names of all ticket-holders will be placed in a box, and one person will be selected at random to win the grand prize. The winner must be present to claim the prize.
In 2008, prizes valued at approximately $8,200 were given away during the evening. The grand prize trip was worth at least $1,100.
“We’re very grateful for businesses and individuals who make donations or purchase tickets,” Sandbulte said. “We also appreciate all those who volunteer to be a dealer or help in another way. Without them, our Casino Night would not be a success.”
CCL supports approximately 140 men and women with developmental disabilities in Winfield, Arkansas City and El Dorado. Part of the money raised at Casino Night might be used for summer camp, a highlight of the year for many. Most likely it will be used for individual needs such as wheelchair purchases or repairs, clothing, medical supplies, recliners for those with limited mobility or even Christmas gifts for clients who would otherwise not receive one.
Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. For more information, contact Sandbulte at (620) 221-9431 or jsandbulte@cclccl.org.
